About Ambaji Temple

Ambaji Temple is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India — one of the 51 sacred sites where parts of Goddess Sati's body are believed to have fallen. Here, the heart of the Goddess is said to have fallen, making it a centre of immense spiritual power.

What makes Ambaji truly unique is the absence of an idol. Instead, the Goddess is worshipped in the form of the Viso Yantra (also called the Visa Yantra) — a 51-centimetre-high triangular silver plaque inscribed with mystical figures and the 18-letter Beej Mantra. This yantra represents the energy of the goddess and is the primary object of devotion.

The temple is dedicated to Arasuri Amba, a manifestation of Goddess Durga. The name "Ambaji" itself means "Mother Ambaji." The temple's original seat was on Gabbar Hill, and thousands of pilgrims still climb the hill or take the ropeway to visit the original shrine.

History & Mythology

According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Shiva carried the burning body of Goddess Sati, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut her body into pieces to calm Shiva. The pieces fell at 51 locations across the Indian subcontinent, which became the Shakti Peethas. At Ambaji, the heart of the Goddess fell.

The temple has been rebuilt and renovated over centuries. The current structure was built in the 11th-12th century during the Solanki period and has been expanded since. The temple is managed by the Ambaji Temple Trust and receives patronage from devotees across Gujarat, Rajasthan, and beyond.

What to See & Do

• Viso Yantra Darshan: The main sanctum where the silver yantra is the focal point of worship.
• Aarti Ceremonies: Witness the grand aarti performed multiple times daily — morning, afternoon, and evening. The evening aarti is especially moving with camphor flames, bells, and devotional songs.
• Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum): The inner sanctum adorned with silver carving and intricate decoration.
• Temple Complex: Explore the sprawling temple grounds with multiple smaller shrines, donation halls, and prasad counters.
• Bhadarvi Poonam Fair: The grand fair held on the full moon of Bhadrapada (August-September) draws over a million devotees.

• October to March: Pleasant weather, ideal for exploring.
• Bhadarvi Poonam (Aug-Sep): The most significant festival with a massive fair.
• Navratri (Sep-Oct): Nine nights of special celebrations with Ramleela, garba, and devotional events.
• Summer (Apr-Jun): Very hot (35-42°C). Visit early morning or late evening.

How to Reach Ambaji Temple

By Road: Ambaji is well-connected by road. From Palanpur (50 km), take SH 132 towards Abu Road. From Ahmedabad (180 km), take NH 48 towards Himmatnagar then the Ambaji route.

By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Palanpur Junction (50 km), well-connected to Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. Abu Road station (30 km) is another option for trains from Rajasthan.

By Air: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad (~180 km, 3.5 hrs drive). Taxis and buses available from the airport.

Tips for Visitors

• Dress modestly — traditional Indian attire is recommended for the temple.
• Footwear must be removed before entering the temple premises (shoe storage available).
• Photography is restricted inside the main sanctum.
• Weekends and festival days are extremely crowded. Plan accordingly.
• Carry water, especially in summer.
• Combine your visit with Gabbar Hill (ropeway), Mangalya Van, and Kumbhariya Jain Temples for a full-day spiritual circuit.
