Geography & Location

Banaskantha is the northernmost district of Gujarat, situated in the north-eastern part of the state. The district is named after the Banas River, which flows through the region. It shares borders with Rajasthan to the north and east, and the newly formed Vav-Tharad district to the west (post-2025 bifurcation).

The district is characterised by the Aravalli hill range in its eastern part, which includes the Gabbar Hill (sacred to Ambaji), Jessore Sanctuary, and the Balaram area. The western parts are flatter, supporting agriculture. The district headquarters is Palanpur, located approximately 135 km from Ahmedabad.

Post-2025 Bifurcation (Current Boundaries)

In 2025, Banaskantha district was bifurcated with the creation of the new Vav-Tharad district from its western talukas. The current Banaskantha district consists of the following talukas: Palanpur, Danta, Vadgam, Deodar, Dhanera, Kankrej, Lakhani, Thara, and Amirgadh. Maps and area figures from before 2025 are outdated and should not be used.

History

• Ancient Period: The region was part of the ancient Gurjaratra and was ruled by various dynasties including the Mauryas, Guptas, and the Solankis (Chalukyas).
• Medieval Period: The area came under the Sultanate of Gujarat and later the Mughal Empire.
• Nawabi Era: The Palanpur State was founded in the 14th century and ruled by the Jhalore Pathan dynasty.
• Post-Independence: Banaskantha district was officially formed in 1960.

Economy

• Agriculture: Major crops include wheat, mustard, cotton, groundnut, and cumin.
• Tourism: A growing sector driven by Ambaji Temple, wildlife sanctuaries, Balaram Palace, and Nada Bet.
• Industries: Small-scale industries including textiles, ceramics, and diamond polishing.
