About the Sanctuary
Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary, covering an area of approximately 180 sq km, is Gujarat's only protected area dedicated to the sloth bear. Located in the Aravalli hill range of Banaskantha district, the sanctuary is named after the sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), which finds ideal habitat in the rocky cliffs and dense forests of this region.
The sanctuary was established in 1978 and forms a contiguous forest belt with the Balaram Ambaji Wildlife Sanctuary, together protecting a large swath of the Aravalli ecosystem. The terrain is rugged and undulating, with altitudes ranging from 150 to 600 metres, interspersed with streams and seasonal waterfalls.
Wildlife
The sanctuary is home to a rich variety of fauna:
- Sloth Bear: The star attraction. Best sighted during early morning or late evening near water sources.
- Leopards: Present but elusive — rarely seen by casual visitors.
- Other Mammals: Hyena, jackal, wild boar, sambar, nilgai, chital, langur, and rhesus macaque.
- Birds: Over 180 species including crested serpent eagle, peafowl, bustard quail, partridge, kingfisher, and various migratory birds in winter.
- Reptiles: Python, monitor lizard, and several snake species.
Trekking & Nature Trails
Jessore offers excellent opportunities for trekking and nature walks. The sanctuary has several trails ranging from easy walks to moderate treks:
- Kedarnath Mahadev Trek: A moderate 3-4 km trek through the forest to the ancient Kedarnath Mahadev Temple nestled among giant boulders.
- Nature Interpretation Trail: A guided walk with forest department naturalists.
- Scenic Viewpoints: Several high points within the sanctuary offer panoramic views of the Aravalli range.
Best Time to Visit
- October to March: Pleasant weather, ideal for trekking and wildlife viewing.
- Monsoon (July-September): Lush green landscape, waterfalls active — but trails can be slippery and leeches present.
- Summer (April-June): Hot but wildlife tends to gather near water sources, offering good sighting opportunities.

Note: The sanctuary may close during monsoon for maintenance; check with the forest office before visiting.
How to Reach
By Road: The sanctuary is about 10 km from Palanpur town on the Palanpur-Ambaji road. The entry gate is clearly signposted.
By Rail: Palanpur Junction (15 km) is the nearest major railway station.
By Air: Ahmedabad Airport (~170 km).
